Chapter 11

Early the next morning, Charlotte woke up even more determined to find Nola’s murderer. She wanted the person caught, so the investigation could be put to rest and justice could be served.

After a quick cup of coffee, Charlotte decided she needed to find out more about Ricco and Nola’s relationship. If he and Nola were so close, then he likely held the key to who her murderer was, even if he didn’t know it. Ronaldo was an easy choice, but there wasn’t enough evidence to prove his involvement, yet. She needed to know more about Nola’s life with Ricco, and whether anything stood out about it that might point to the murderer.

Charlotte recalled that Ricco took Cynthia’s art classes. Cynthia was a resident and she ran the class. Maybe Charlotte could see if Cynthia knew anything more about Ricco. Maybe she would know more about his relationship with Nola, if she often saw him.

Charlotte made her way to Cynthia’s room. She looked at the decorations around the door and they immediately brought a smile to her lips. There was a Christmas wreath on the door, with a small inflatable Santa on one side of the door and a snowman on the other side. Charlotte knew that Cynthia’s grandchildren had given them to her and whenever Charlotte walked past her door they put her in the Christmas spirit. Charlotte knocked on the door. She knew Cynthia would be up despite the early hour.

The door swung open and Cynthia smiled out at her. As Charlotte had predicted she looked like she had been up for hours.

“Charlotte.” Her smile widened.

“Cynthia, I’m sorry to bother you so early.”

“Oh, it’s no trouble. I’ve been up for a couple of hours already.” Cynthia smiled. “Best part of the day. What can I do for you?”

“I wanted to talk to you about Ricco, if you have a few minutes?” Charlotte smiled.

“Sure I do. Such a shame about Nola.” Cynthia gestured for her to step inside. “Come inside and I’ll make us some coffee.”

“Thank you.” Charlotte stepped inside and looked around at the paintings on the wall. They were beautiful and all of various landscapes. “You’ve got some new pieces up?”

“Yes, I’ve been busy on them.” Cynthia called from the kitchen as she made them coffee.

“They are amazing.” Charlotte smiled. “You are very talented.”

“I try. It is a passion of mine.” Cynthia walked in with the coffee, set the cups on the coffee table, then sat in a chair.

Charlotte sat down across from her.

“Ricco must be so heartbroken over Nola’s death.” Cynthia took a sip of her coffee.

“He is. Did you know Nola well?”

“No, just in passing.” Cynthia smiled. “She did come to some of the art classes with Ricco. He often mentioned how Nola helped him. When I checked on him, he said he didn’t need anything, Nola took care of everything and he was fine.”

“You checked on him?” Charlotte had a sip of coffee.

“I did. He stopped coming to art class. Said he felt weak, so I checked on him.
